Made by Crochet Artisans of Nakuru, Kenya

This women-led cooperative was founded in 2004 with the explicit purpose of creating jobs for women in the apparel and home goods industries.

Located in an area of Kenya where the unemployment rate is as high as 40%, the group’s founder saw an opportunity to create real change by training women in crochet and knitting. Many of the artisans have been widowed by the AIDS epidemic, so their employment enables them to support their families.

The group’s leader also founded an orphanage in the community, which provides shelter, food, healthcare and psychological support and education for children in need. A percentage of the group’s proceeds are used to support this orphanage and contribute to the local community.
